The Big Sound Beckons: A Day Trip to Parry Sound, Ontario

There are Georgian Bay towns, and then there is Parry Sound. Sitting on the edge of the world’s largest freshwater archipelago — a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve — this is the town where Bobby Orr was born, where the Festival of the Sound fills one of Canada’s finest concert halls every summer, and where the islands of Georgian Bay stretch to the horizon in every direction. It is also, thanks to FlixBus, more accessible from Toronto than ever before. From the moment you step off the bus and catch your first glimpse of the Big Sound, you’ll understand why people fall in love with this place. Here is your day.

The iconic Island Queen Cruise

On the Water: The Island Queen & the Islander

Island Queen Cruise Town Dock, Bay Street

The Island Queen is the experience that defines a Parry Sound day trip. The 550-passenger flagship vessel sails twice daily from the Town Dock, offering two classic cruise experiences that are consistently ranked among the finest boat tours in Ontario.
The Two-Hour Morning Cruise takes a meandering route through the stunning inner islands of the Big Sound — a tranquil journey through picturesque channels including the iconic Hole in the Wall, drifting past charming summer retreats and ancient granite shorelines. A perfect way to start the day.
The Three-Hour Afternoon Cruise follows in the wake of early explorers, venturing out to the famous outer islands of Georgian Bay — the world’s largest freshwater archipelago — with the captain bringing the ship surprisingly close to the rugged, pristine island wilderness and the edges of Killbear and Massasauga Provincial Parks. A genuinely unforgettable afternoon on the water.

The Islander Adventure Tours: The Island Queen’s new 40-passenger boutique vessel offers a more intimate exploration of the Bay. Most popular is the Lunch Tour to Henry’s Fish Restaurant on Frying Pan Island — a one-hour scenic cruise through the South Channel to Henry’s legendary island restaurant, with just over an hour ashore for fresh Georgian Bay pickerel, whitefish, perch, and butter tarts. A one-of-a-kind Georgian Bay experience with pre-ordered lunch (tickets available via islandqueencruise.com). Also available: a guided hiking tour to Huckleberry Island with a Georgian Bay Biosphere Reserve naturalist and a swim at a secluded beach — one of the finest eco-experiences on the entire Bay.

Georgian Bay Watching: Cruise Ships & the Big Sound View

Parry Sound sits on what is widely described as the world’s deepest freshwater harbour — deep enough that ocean-going vessels have docked here throughout history, and large enough that watching the water traffic from the harbourfront boardwalk is an experience in itself. On busy summer days, the Town Dock area hums with activity — the Island Queen loading, water taxis crossing the harbour, pleasure craft threading through the channels, and occasionally something much larger rounding the point. The bayside deck at the Stockey Centre is the finest vantage point in town to simply sit and take in the scale and beauty of the Big Sound — there are very few views like it anywhere in Ontario.

The Bobby Orr Hall of Fame & Charles W. Stockey Centre 2 Bay Street

No visit to Parry Sound is complete without paying respects to the greatest defenceman who ever played the game. Born in Parry Sound in 1948, Bobby Orr revolutionised hockey — and the interactive sports heritage museum dedicated to his story does full justice to the legend. Orr’s NHL championship rings, Norris Trophy, Hart Memorial Trophy, and Art Ross Trophy are on display alongside a rich pictorial history of his extraordinary career. Interactive games let visitors test their own hockey skills, and the Doug and Arva Orr Gift Shop carries a fine selection of Hall of Fame keepsakes.

The Festival of the Sound

The Festival of the Sound July 22 to August 8, 2026

If your visit falls between late July and early August, the Festival of the Sound transforms the Stockey Centre into one of Canada’s premier summer music events. Now in its 47th season, the Festival brings world-class classical, chamber, and jazz performers to Georgian Bay for three weeks of extraordinary concerts. From the National Youth Orchestra of Canada opening night to the extraordinary A Transfigured Night — featuring Janina Fialkowska, the Viano String Quartet, and the Dixieland Cruise on the Island Queen, the programming is consistently outstanding. Bands on the Bay runs free every Tuesday evening throughout summer on the waterfront deck.

Trestle Brewing Company 9 Great North Road

Right next door to Legend Spirits — and sharing the same magnificent view of the CPR Trestle Bridge — Trestle Brewing Company is celebrating its 10th anniversary in 2026 and has never been better. The Fire Tower Lookout at the Museum on Tower Hill

Hiking & the Big Sound Views

Tower Hill Lookout & Heritage Garden A short but rewarding walk up Tower Hill brings you to one of the finest views in Parry Sound — a 30-metre high lookout offering spectacular 360-degree views over the harbour, the 30,000 Islands, and Georgian Bay stretching to the horizon. The Tower Hill Heritage Garden surrounds the lookout with beautifully maintained plantings and interpretive signage bringing the region’s history to life. A bonus for art lovers: the view from Tower Hill can be compared directly to a 1914 painting by Tom Thomson made from the same vantage point — one of those moments that connects the landscape to its artistic legacy in a deeply satisfying way.

The Museum on Tower Hill At the base of the lookout, the Museum on Tower Hill offers a well-curated window into the history of Parry Sound and the West Parry Sound District — from Indigenous history and the fur trade to the railway era, the lumber industry, and the development of Georgian Bay as one of Canada’s great tourist destinations.

The Rotary & Algonquin Regiment Fitness Trail A 6-kilometre waterfront trail running from the Town Dock along the Georgian Bay shoreline and connecting to the North Shore Rugged Trail — an excellent walk or run with outstanding water views throughout. The trail links directly to Waubuno Beach — a Blue Flag designated swimming beach that is one of the finest public beaches in Parry Sound.

Evening: Sunset on the Bay

Parry Sound does not disappoint at golden hour. The bayside deck at the Stockey Centre, the patio at Trestle Brewing, or the riverside terrace at Legend Spirits are the three finest places to watch the sun drop behind the islands of Georgian Bay — and any of them will do the job beautifully. If the Festival of the Sound is running, an evening concert in one of Canada’s finest intimate halls is the perfect way to end a day in one of Ontario’s most remarkable towns.
