History & Culture
Misko-Aki: Confluence of Cultures is the centrepiece — a profound and beautifully conceived permanent exhibit curated entirely by a circle of twenty Indigenous Elders, scholars, and linguists representing the Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabek, Métis, and Haudenosaunee peoples who have made Muskoka home for more than 10,000 years. The visitor is taken on a seven-stop metaphoric canoe journey through the region’s Indigenous history — from time immemorial to the present day. It is one of the most important cultural experiences in Ontario. Misko-Aki, meaning red earth in the Anishinaabe language, is the origin of the word Muskoka itself.
Bethune Memorial House National Historic Site 235 John Street A short stroll from downtown, this beautifully preserved Victorian home is the birthplace of Dr. Norman Bethune — one of Canada’s most remarkable figures. A surgeon, humanitarian, and revolutionary thinker who is celebrated as a national hero in China for his extraordinary work during the Second Sino-Japanese War, Bethune’s story is genuinely gripping. Parks Canada manages the site with excellent interpretive programming throughout the summer. Free admission for youth under 17.
Gravenhurst Opera House 295 Muskoka Road South Celebrating its 125th anniversary in 2026, the Gravenhurst Opera House is one of the finest historic venues in Ontario — a 305-seat landmark that has been the cultural heartbeat of downtown Gravenhurst since 1901. The Muskoka Wharf & Discovery Centre
The Muskoka Wharf on Lake Muskoka Almost half a kilometre of boardwalk along Gravenhurst Bay on Lake Muskoka, the Muskoka Wharf is the heart of Gravenhurst’s summer season. Boutique shops, galleries, restaurants, the Discovery Centre, and the steamship dock all radiate from this beautiful waterfront hub — and the views across the lake on a summer afternoon are simply stunning.
Muskoka Steamships There is no better way to experience the magic of Muskoka than from the deck of a historic steamship. TheWenonah II sails daily from the Wharf on sightseeing cruises across Lake Muskoka, Lake Rosseau, and Lake Joseph. Afternoon cruises typically depart around 2pm — check the schedule and book ahead in summer. muskokasteamships.com
The Peninsula Trail If you’d rather stay on land, the Peninsula Trail winds along the shoreline from the Wharf through stands of mature pine and along the rocky water’s edge — a beautiful and easy one-hour loop with outstanding lake views.
Gull Lake
Gull Lake Rotary Park Muskoka Road South A short walk from the downtown, Gull Lake Rotary Park is one of Gravenhurst’s most beloved public spaces — a sandy beach, picnic area, and on Wednesday’s it is the home of the Gravenhurst Farmers Market. If your visit falls on a Sunday evening between June and September check out Music on the Barge. Settling on the grass for a free concert as the sun goes down over the lake is one of the finest ways to spend an evening in cottage country.
