Snowshoeing in Ontario’s Cottage Country

By Kate
November 19, 2014

With thousands of kilometres of trails to explore, the great Canadian wilderness in Ontario’s cottage country is the perfect place to try one of winter’s fastest-growing outdoor activities.

Winter is a unique time to explore the stunning natural landscape found all across Ontario’s cottage country. From Algonquin Park in the east to Parry Sound on Georgian Bay in the west, from Loring-Restoule and the Almaguin Highlands in the north and Muskoka to the south, each fresh snowfall offers outdoor adventurers the opportunity to explore frosted forests in all their spectacular glory.

A traditional winter activity for Canadians everywhere, snowshoeing is not only good for the health (what’s better than a hike through the woods in clean, crisp air?), it’s also great for discovering places you can’t explore in other seasons. And with the leaves off the trees, you’ll see further into the forest than you ever do in spring, summer or fall.

The great Canadian wilderness has tons of snowshoe routes across a range of terrain to choose from, located at public parks (Arrowhead and Algonquin), on managed trails, and at privately-owned establishments, such as Muskoka Lakes Farm & Winery in Bala or the Riverside Trails at LivOutside in Bracebridge.

Local outfitters and accommodations providers can help you discover the trails and fit you with equipment. You can even go on a guided snowshoe hike with outfitters such as Find Your Wild, Algonquin Outfitters or Camp Bongopix. Or you may wish to make your own path in the bush, and the sites below will help you plan your trek.
