Two Histories, One Day in Gravenhurst, Ontario
Gravenhurst surprises you. You come for the lake and you leave with something you weren’t expecting; a story, a conversation, a piece of history.
Some places hold more than they let on, Gravenhurst is one of them. The Indigenous peoples of this region have called it home for over 10,000 years, and that presence isn’t history, it’s here, alive, and worth knowing. And then there’s Dr. Norman Bethune, born in a Victorian manse on John Street, who went on to become one of the most remarkable and controversial figures in Canadian history. Two stories, one incredible day in Gravenhurst, Ontario.
The Great Canadian Wilderness has created Gravenhurst: Two Histories, One Day, a curated day package guided by the people who know this place best. It’s the kind of travel we believe in: purposeful, community-rooted, and designed to leave this place better than we found it.
Dates: Thursdays and Sundays, May 17 – June 14, 2026 – 9 dates total.
Availability: Limited to only 15 participants per day
Itinerary
9:45am – 11am | Guided Tour — Bethune Memorial House National Historic Site, Parks Canada
Dr. Norman Bethune was born in this house on John Street, and what followed was one of the most unlikely lives in Canadian history. A physician, an inventor, a humanitarian, and a figure so revered in China that to over a billion people, he became the face of Canada.
Your guide begins with a traditional Chinese tea ceremony, a tribute to the years Bethune spent serving the wounded during the Second Sino-Japanese War. From there the tour moves through the exhibits, the film, and the family home itself, Victorian architecture, personal artefacts, and the stories behind them. You’ll see the surgery-assisting device he invented in the field, hear about his mobile blood transfusion unit, and walk through his advocacy for universal health care long before it existed in this country.
1:30pm – 3pm | Guided Tour — Misko-Aki: Confluence of Cultures, Muskoka Discovery Centre
Guests who take part in a guided tour of Misko-Aki: Confluence of Cultures can expect a deeply personal and meaningful experience, led by an Indigenous Knowledge Keeper. These tours offer far more than an overview of the exhibit—they provide an opportunity to engage directly with living knowledge, shared through story, experience, and cultural perspective.
Through the tour, guests are guided on a journey that explores the deep and enduring relationship between the Anishinaabeg and the Muskoka region. Rather than focusing solely on historical timelines, the experience emphasizes connection to land, language, and tradition. Visitors gain insight into how knowledge is passed from generation to generation, the significance of cultural practices, and the importance of viewing history as something that is still alive today.
A key takeaway for many guests is a broader understanding of Indigenous worldviews—particularly the values of respect, reciprocity, and stewardship. The Knowledge Keeper helps contextualize the exhibit in a way that encourages reflection, inviting visitors to consider their own relationship with the land and their role in caring for it. Guests often leave with a deeper appreciation for the richness and resilience of Indigenous cultures, as well as a more thoughtful awareness of the ongoing journey of reconciliation.
Each tour is shaped by the voice and lived experience of the Knowledge Keeper leading it. Their storytelling brings authenticity and depth, creating space for dialogue and, when appropriate, questions. This makes every tour unique, grounded not only in the exhibit itself but in the personal teachings and perspectives shared in the moment. Ultimately, the Misko-Aki guided tour offers guests something truly special: the chance to listen, learn, and connect in a way that is respectful, immersive, and lasting.
