Hidden Gems & Crystal Magic: A Day Trip to South River, Ontario
Most visitors to the Almaguin Highlands drive straight through South River without stopping. That is a mistake. This small village — with Algonquin Park a 20-minute drive to the east and Mikisew Provincial Park a short hop to the west — is a genuinely charming and completely unhurried destination with one attraction in particular that stops people in their tracks. FlixBus connects South River directly to Toronto, making it one of the most accessible and least-expected day trips in cottage country. Here’s what to do when you arrive.

The Main Event: Crystal Cave 11077 Highway 124
There is simply nothing else like Crystal Cave in the region — and very little like it anywhere in Ontario. Founded and built over a lifetime by biologist and geologist Julia Breckenridge and her daughter Braelyn, a Fine Arts graduate from OCAD and NSCAD, Crystal Cave is a mineral exhibit, crystal shoppe, artisan village, and faerie forest rolled into one completely enchanting experience.
The centrepiece is the Mineral Exhibit and Learning Centre — a meticulously curated collection of minerals, fossils, crystals, and rare geological specimens accumulated by the Breckenridge family over more than 60 years, gathered from across the world and right here in Ontario. Julia’s macro-photography of the specimens lines the walls, augmented reality (AR) brings the collection to life in unexpected ways, and guided tours led by knowledgeable staff add depth and story to every display case. From fluorescent minerals glowing under UV light to ancient fossils and rare gemstones, it is the kind of collection that captivates children and leaves adults genuinely wide-eyed.
Beyond the exhibit, the Crystal Shoppe sells handmade jewellery, amulets, hand-polished gems, and artisan goods — all made by hand and unique to this place. The Artisan Village, running from May 24 to Thanksgiving, showcases the work of local Almaguin Highlands artists and makers in a beautiful outdoor setting. And tucked behind it all, the Faerie Forest is pure magic — whimsical fairy houses and enchanting hidden corners that are perfectly designed for children but genuinely delightful for everyone.
Tom Thomson Park Ottawa Avenue, South River
Just a short walk from the village centre, Tom Thomson Park is a beautifully designed riverside green space inspired by the work of Tom Thomson himself — the legendary Canadian artist who used South River as a regular jumping-off point for his adventures into Algonquin Park. The park hugs the South River with beautiful gardens, a walking path, a boat launch, picnic tables, and an 18-hole disc golf course — one of the most serene and unhurried public parks in the entire Almaguin Highlands. Bring your discs, bring a picnic, or simply sit by the river and let the Highlands quiet your thoughts for a while.
Your Adventure Starts Here: Two Provincial Parks on the Doorstep
Mikisew Provincial Park sits just 12 kilometres to the west of South River on beautiful Eagle Lake — sandy beaches, hiking trails winding through lush forests and wetlands, and access to the Forgotten Trails network that follows the routes of the region’s Indigenous peoples and earliest settlers. A wonderful extension to a South River day.
Algonquin Park’s northwest gate is a mere 20 kilometres to the east — making South River a natural base for a day paddle into the backcountry, a hike along the Forgotten Trails, or a first introduction to one of Canada’s greatest wild places.
