Fish the Edge: Muskoka

Known primarily as Ontario’s cottage country and as a popular summer vacation spot, Muskoka will surprise angling fans as a four-season fishing destination with excellent – and accessible – recreational and avid opportunities.

Located at the southern edge of the Canadian Shield between Algonquin Park and the Almaguin Highlands, the area is dominated by the Muskoka River and many “shield lakes,” which are deep and cold. There is a range of accommodations to make your home base, including luxury resorts, cottage resorts and campgrounds. The area offers a number of services catering to both the novice fisherman and to the avid angler looking for that record catch, and there are a number of tournaments, guiding/charter services and some ice hut rental outfitters to fit any budget or skill level.

The area lakes have an abundance of large and small mouth bass, walleye/pickerel, northern pike, lake trout, crappie, muskie and white fish.
