Winter Outdoors in Parry Sound

By Kate
November 1, 2014

Parry Sound
in winter is dream destination for anyone who loves outdoor adventure. When the snow arrives and the sparkling waters freeze over, this “Jewel of the 30,000 Islands” turns into a wilderness playground for visitors and locals alike. The season is a a great time to explore the Unesco Georgian Bay Biosphere Reserve (which encompasses Parry Sound and the surrounding areas) from a whole new perspective. Here you’ll get a taste of the rugged north, without having to travel great distances to get it.

GeorgianNordic

On January 29th, 2014 Georgian Nordic Ski & Canoe Club is hosting its annual Sounder Ski Tour. If you’re not into competing you can still head onto their fantastic trail system (more than 30 kms) on Nine Mile Lake Road and enjoy a jaunt through the gorgeous woods. Everyone is welcome, from novice to expert.

On February 11 & 12, 2014, Georgian Nordic is also hosting the Active Women’s Weekend, with events organized at their centre and throughout town. Stay the weekend and take part in tons of activities, including skiing, fat biking, yoga, snowshoeing and dancing. You can even learn to kite ski!

Fat Biking on Georgian BayThroughout the winter, fat bikes are available for renting at Parry Sound Bikes. Ride them on the Rotary and Algonquin Regiment Fitness Trail, at Georgian Nordic (pass required) and on various trails throughout the region (check out Get Outdoors Parry Sound for fat biking planning as well.)

White Squall is renowned as a paddling centre but staff love winter too. Staff host guided snowshoe treks every Sunday while the powder is good (call the store to reserve your spot). You can also rent equipment for your own excursion at their downtown location on Bay St. by the harbour.
family snowmobileSnowmobile fanatics can plan overnight getaways using the handy tourism loops developed by the Parry Sound Snowmobile District (#10) featuring such names as “The Mosquito.” Take the a longer tour and venture out onto the Ride The Edge loops to see some of the most beautiful scenery in Ontario.

Restaurants, accommodations, shops and attractions are open for business this winter in Parry Sound. Visit one of the most scenic spots in the province and discover new adventures waiting for you on the shores of beautiful Georgian Bay.
