The Great Canadian Winter – Just Two Hours From Toronto

By Kate

EE Winter312

Here in Explorers’ Edge, the first snowfall and the arrival of cold weather have sparked a collective fire within us. That’s because in this region of Ontario – just two hours of Toronto – the season brings to life our inherited, iconic notions of what a great Canadian winter should be.

To our way of thinking, snow is not something to be shoveled out of the way.  Rather it’s for piling into a huge mounds for ski jumps or super slides. Ice is not something to be chipped apart, but rather to be smoothed into the perfect, glistening surface for a game of shinny or a skate with a friend, or climbed like a wall. Snowflakes falling are not a sign of unknown inches to come, but the settling of new, white frosting on a hushed forest that will take your breath away.

EE Winter865From dog sledding to snowshoeing, from skiing to ice fishing, from curling up by a roaring fire to indulging in some heartier food, winter in Explorers’ Edge is a time to embrace the renowned Canadian wilderness. So what if some animals hibernate – that doesn’t mean you should. Get out and explore thousands of kilometres of trails by snowshoes or skis.  Bring your palette and brushes and paint a winter landscape of hues unseen in the warmer seasons. Explore an Ontario park – like Arrowhead or Algonquin. And take in one of many fun events, like the annual Comics on the Rocks festival in Huntsville, or one of many winter carnivals.

EE Winter629Join us in Algonquin Park, the Almaguin Highlands, Loring-Restoule, Muskoka and Parry Sound for winter the way it’s meant to be: big snowy fun full of thrilling adventures. It’s the Canadian way.
