On World Turtle Day, May 23rd, we celebrate one of the region's most ancient and beloved residents — from the snapping turtle patrolling the muddy shallows to the painted turtle basking on a sun-warmed log. These remarkable creatures have been part of our lakes and wetlands long before cottage country had a name. Sadly, many of the seven native turtle species found here are now at risk, threatened by habitat loss, roads, and slow reproductive rates — so if you spot a turtle on the road this spring, give it a helping hand in the direction it's already heading.

Victoria Day long weekend — the unofficial start of summer in Ontario — means many things in the Great Canadian Wilderness. The lakes are calling, the docks are going in, patios are opening up, the smell of the first campfire of the season is in the air, and cottage country is officially, gloriously open for business.

Every May, this region comes alive as thousands of migratory birds return to the lakes, wetlands, forests, and shorelines of Muskoka, Almaguin Highlands, Loring-Restoule, Parry Sound, and Algonquin regions. World Migratory Bird Day on May 9, 2026 is the perfect reminder of just how extraordinary that annual spectacle truly is.
Sandhill crane, ruby-throated hummingbird, black-throated blue warbler, yellow-bellied sapsucker, rose-breasted grosbeak, northern parula, common loon.

Today is Red Dress Day, a National Day of Awareness honouring Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two-Spirit People.

Wear red and display red dresses to remember those who have been taken, to honour families and survivors, and to raise awareness of the ongoing violence faced by Indigenous people across Canada.

To those who have lost a sister, a mother, a daughter, a child, a friend, or a loved one — we send our love, support, and strength.

We remember. We honour. We call for justice. ❤️
