22nd Annual Kearney Dog Sled Races
Head to the beautiful Almaguin Highlands this February 13 & 14 to celebrate what promises to be a highlight of winter 2016. The 22nd Annual Kearney Dog Sled Races will showcase the largest race event in Ontario, and the only one featuring a 120 mile overnight trek through the stunning wilderness just north of Muskoka, on the western edge of Algonquin Park.
A highlight of the dog sledding season, professional mushers are coming to compete from across Ontario, Manitoba, Quebec and from as far away as Alaska. The Kearney Dog Sled Races will also feature 4 mile, 6 mile, 35 mile, skijoring and “Kid & Mutt” races.
In addition to the races, visitors to this signature event in Kearney can enjoy skating, a bonfire, fine food and fun entertainment, making it a super family adventure in the heart of winter. The entire weekend has a carnival atmosphere in this charming town of 800 residents, and it’s a unique way to enjoy Ontario’s great outdoors in the snowy season. (And just try not to be as excited as the dog teams that are raring to go – their enthusiasm is infectious.)
No need to travel all the way to the North Pole to witness this iconic Canadian tradition in action. One of the nation’s best dog sledding events is just over two hours from Toronto.
